Our Sustainability Efforts Explained
We see the path to becoming a fully sustainable business as a work in progress. We’re constantly exploring ways to lower our environmental footprint and create products that are both performing and safe for people and the planet. Here are some of the things we’re doing.
WHEN WE CREATE OUR PRODUCTS:
We formulate all our products without cyclic silicones.
Although commonly used in hair care products – cyclic silicones are not biodegradable. They do not break down easily after they enter the waterways and they can cause damage to the environment and to aquatic animals and organisms.
Our products do not contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).
PFAS are a group of chemical compounds that are considered “forever chemicals”. They can take thousands of years to break down and are toxic for both people and the environment. In spite of this – PFAS are often used in the cosmetics and hair care industries.
Our products are free of parabens.
Parabens are synthetic preservatives that are added to products to artificially extend
their shelf life. Parabens are believed to have negative health affects on people – and they cause harm to the environment when they wash off and enter the waterways, affecting the ecology and marine animals.
All our products are vegan, with the exception of waxes
– which contain natural beeswax.
Vegan hair care products are free of any ingredients derived from animals. Instead, we use the highest quality plant-based ingredients to achieve the same results. One example is Anti-Frizz Shampoo that is infused with Organic Argan Oil and Vegetable Protein.
All Björn Axén products are cruelty-free.
We don’t now – and never have – tested our products on animals. We are strictly against testing products on animals.
WHEN WE PACKAGE OUR PRODUCTS:
We have phased out all unnecessary secondary packaging.
This means that we don’t package individual products with an additional box around them, unless absolutely necessary. This minimizes waste and less packaging winds up in landfills. The only exceptions in our range are brushes, which must be packed in a box or reusable bag to protect them from damage during shipping and handling.
All our packaging is 100% recyclable.
Every part of the packaging on all our products can be collected and recycled into new products or packaging.
The tubes we use are made from 50% sugarcane.
Sugarcane is a renewable resource. This means that it can be replenished naturally and quickly. Sugarcane tubes have the same practical properties as traditional plastic tubes, but they’re biodegradable. And they’re made from the byproducts of the sugar industry.
By 2026 – all our other packaging will be made from 60-100% recycled materials.
